Ken Krawetz was an MLA for 21-years—the first two as a Liberal and then as interim leader of a new party formed by four Liberals and four Progressive Conservatives in 1997.
The Canora-Pelly MLA was a teacher prior to being elected in 1995. He served as the interim leader of the Saskatchewan Party until Elwin Hermanson was elected to the legislature in the 1999 election.
When Brad Wall become Sask. Party leader in 2004, he named Krawetz as the deputy leader. After the Sask. Party formed government, Krawetz played key roles in cabinet at various times, serving as finance minister, education minister and deputy premier.
Krawetz was a big supporter of his Ukrainian heritage. He received the highest honour from Ukraine that a non-citizen can receive. He was recognized for his efforts in passing the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide Act through the legislature.
Krawetz announced in 2014 that he would not run again in the 2016 election. Flags at the legislature have been lowered to half-staff in his honour.
