Saskatchewan has unveiled a new memorial in tribute to those who have fallen in the line of duty.

The Saskatchewan Protective Services Memorial is a permanent tribute meant to recognize the service and sacrifices of people who lost their lives in the line of duty, such as firefighters, police officers, paramedics, correctional workers, emergency communications personnel, conservation officers and other protective services professionals.

The memorial features an image of the Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal, a “helping hands” structure and a commemorative message. A total of 66 names are inscribed on the memorial with space to honour additional individuals in future years.

The design was chosen by a working group representing first responder and public service sector organizations.

The memorial was developed by the SPSA and costs about $900,000, including a $100,000 contribution from WorkSafe Saskatchewan.

The memorial is located on Memorial Way southwest of the Legislature Building.

Along with the new memorial, City of Saskatoon facilities flew their flags at half-mast in recognition of Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day.

Flags were lowered to half-mast in tribute to officers killed in the line of duty.
