Today marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, with memorial services and commemorative events taking place across the United States and globally.

The terror attacks in Manhattan that day killed nearly 3,000 people and ushered in an era of of heavy security at events and stricter controls at borders.

In Canada, Gander, Newfoundland is remembering the tragic day with a number of events, including several commemoration services and a ‘come from away’ story screening at the Gander Airport.

On this day 25 years ago, Gander welcomed 38 diverted international flights and nearly 7,000 stranded passengers and crew after U.S. airspace closed.
