Saskatoon City Police and the provincial government issued news releases on Thursday advising the public to be on alert for text messages claiming recipients have an outstanding traffic violation.
The scamming texts falsely identify themselves coming from the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan or Saskatoon City Police.
Both agencies do not conduct fine payment through text messages and does not send out alerts regarding overdue fines by text.
If you receive text messages from a scammer, you are encouraged to keep the following tips in mind:
- Do not click any links.
- Don’t submit any payment details or personal information.
- Do not reply.
- Block the phone number immediately.
- Keep records of the texts.
If you are unsure of the legitimacy of a text message or believe you are the victim of a fraud, please contact your local police or Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachment.
