Southwest Saskatchewan is under a heat warning with daytime highs in the low to mid-thirties combined with overnight lows in the high teens that will persist through the weekend and into early next week.

For northern Saskatchewan including south to Tisdale and Melfort it’s an air quality warning due to wildfire smoke from fires in northern Saskatchewan and northern Manitoba. Of the 56 wildfires burning in Saskatchewan right now, six are not contained. There have been 267 fires to date this year while the five-year average is 375.

While Saskatoon and Prince Albert are not part of the heat warning the temperatures will be around 30 degrees Thursday and the humidex will make it feel in the mid to upper 30’s.

As part of the Saskatoon Extreme Heat & Air Quality Emergency Response Plan, all spray pads hours have been extended to 10:00 p.m. starting Thursday and going through Monday. Spray pads open daily at 10:00 a.m.

The City of Saskatoon says heat illness can range from heat rash and heat stroke to heat exhaustion and heat cramps.  Common symptoms of heat illness include headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, rapid breathing and heartbeat and extreme thirst.  In children it could be a change of behavior like sleepiness or temper tantrums.
