This is Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. A new Fraser Institute study has provided some recommendations that it suggests could restore public trust and faith in politics. The main pillars include introducing a 12-year cumulative term limits for federal politicians. Have parliamentarians who leave their party sit as independents or face a by-election. Restore the 2013 democratic reform bill, which means parties would have less disciplinary power which the Institute suggests would give MPs the latitude to better represent their constituents. Reform the Senate to reduce regional polarization. And finally respect the division of powers between the federal and provincial governments and allow provinces to innovate and better reflect their citizens’ preferences. Reform the senate – I agree – but I’m less worried about current governments stocking it with party followers than I am with the latitude allowed senators as well as the compensation. I think an MP that crosses the floor should mean that constituency has a by-election. and while its nice idea to put a timeline on how long someone can represent – the problem with that is will there be another candidate willing to step up.  Politics – it’s not for the faint of heart but hopefully those who are part of the political matrix are doing it for a greater purpose than a cushy pension or fat pay cheque.
