A record nineteen teams of dedicated and highly trained emergency response/mine rescue personnel showcased their skills during an event at Prairieland in Saskatoon on Saturday.
There were 11 underground teams and eight surface rescue teams competing in seven events—bench technician, fire fighting, practical skills, proficiency, surface rope rescue, simulated surface and underground mine problems.

Westmoreland Mining Poplar River received the National Safety Award in the Coal category with a rate of zero—representing more than 274,000 hours worked with no lost time injuries, or modified work injuries at their operations in 2025. The Poplar River Mine has won the national ward in six of the past eight years.
