Multiple houses and even more garages were reduced to charred rubble Friday afternoon in Saskatoon’s Hampton Village neighbourhood, after a fire broke out on Geary Crescent.
In speaking with witness, it is determined that roughly five homes and 10 garages in counting were impacted. Crews are still on scene with multiple ladder trucks dousing nearby homes in water in an attempt to protect them from meeting the same fate.
The Saskatoon Fire Department says two aerial units, four engines, one rescue unit and Command 9 have responded to the scene, as well as a Deputy chief, Battalion chief, and a safety officer for a total of 32 firefighters on scene. Crews were dispatched at 12:04.
What started about as a large plume of thick black smoke has now been mostly resolved, but high temperatures and windy conditions continue to make the jobs of Saskatoon firefighters even harder. Using the wind, the fire jumped the road and began to sink its teeth into a house on the neighbouring Crescent.
Updates will be provided when made available.
