First Nations leaders in northern Saskatchewan are calling for urgent action from the provincial and federal governments following recent deaths in Pelican Narrows. The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation and the Prince Albert Grand Council say the homicide of a 16-year-old and the suspicious death of a 26-year-old have deepened fear in a community already facing rising violence, including drive-by shootings, bear spray incidents and other firearm-related calls.
Leaders say Pelican Narrows is critically under-resourced, with shortages of specialized RCMP officers and limited access to enforcement and prevention programs. They are calling for increased policing, expanded social supports, improved cell service and long-term investments in community safety.
