No charges will be laid following a Serious Incident Response Team investigation into an officer-involved shooting.
Back on May 28, 2025, RCMP officers spotted a vehicle connected to several firearms incidents on the James Smith Cree Nation.
After several failed traffic stops, the suspect vehicle collided with an embankment in a pasture east of Canwood and came to an abrupt stop. The suspect then exited the vehicle holding a silver handgun, was later determined to be unloaded. The suspect refused to comply with police demands, so the Subject Officer discharged two rounds from his service pistol through the front windows of the SUV, with one round striking the affected person in the arm, causing him to fall to the ground.
As the affected person fell to the ground, he turned over his weapon and was arrested without further incident. The female passenger in the SUV was also arrested. The suspect was treated for a gunshot wound to the left arm, and the female passenger was treated for injuries sustained during the SUV’s collision with the embankment.
Due to the seemingly dangerous nature of the situation, SIRT has ruled that the officer acted reasonably.
