A statement issued by Saskatchewan Polytechnic says the post-secondary institution continues ” to face significant challenges in the international education environment.”
Sask Polytech says 30 full-time and part-time employees received layoff notices this April. This includes 18 faculty, nine professional services employees and three out of scope employees.
As well, a rebound in international enrolment is not expected next academic year.
The statement also says it is a challenging time for Sask Polytech and the decisions are not made lightly.
An annual operational review was recently undertaken which the school says will “ensure programs align with labour market demand, operational efficiency and budget priorities.”
The Saskatchewan NDP says the most recent 30 layoffs are in addition to 150 previous layoffs.
In a news release Tajinder Grewal, Shadow Minister for Advanced Education, says, “”We can’t have a strong Saskatchewan without a strong Sask Poly,”
The federal government drastically cut the number of international student permits issued for 2025 and 2026 in part to deal with the ongoing housing shortage in the country.
