Construction on the 60-bed emergency shelter at 170 31st Street East is expected to begin this summer. This comes after the request for proposal process for its design and construction were awarded to Quorex Construction Services.
The provincial government-owned site was approved by the city based on its access to transit and nearby support services, and because it meets all City zoning requirements for shelters.
In a news release, Mayor Cynthia Block said, “As Saskatoon sees more people experiencing homelessness, this project is an important step in responding to that growing need. The safety of shelter guests, as well as nearby residents and businesses, is our top priority. The city is working closely with all the partners involved to develop coordinated safety plans.”
Work is currently underway on the shelter design that will meet safety and programming needs. Design aspects will also include elements such as lighting and fencing to enhance community safety.
The total construction cost for the shelter is approximately $6 million and is expected to be completed in spring 2027.
