Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says recent high gas prices are not entirely due to global pressures otherwise there wouldn’t be such a difference in the cost of gas in the U.S. versus Canada.
Poilievre contends the discrepancy is due to taxes and the weak dollar created by the Liberal government. Poilievre says proof that high costs are linked to taxes is as easy as comparing what we pay in Canada versus the United States. He notes there is a 10 cent a litre excise tax, the 7-cent/litre fuel standard tax and he says then GST is charged and it is charged not only on the fuel but the other taxes.
Poilievre is calling on the Liberal government to pause all taxes on fuel for the rest of the year.
