Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says she hasn’t spoken to the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio since the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran February 28th.
Anand is in Türkiye and took questions from reporters Tuesday. Rubio has urged allies to help open the Strait of Hormuz of which at least 20 per cent of the world’s oil passes through and is currently closed due to attacks on ships by Iran.
She says there should be no weaponization of international shipping lanes – period.
“And that includes the Strait of Hormuz. Our current conversation with gulf countries rests on how we can continue to support them especially in the face of indiscriminate attacks, retaliatory in nature, by Iran.”
When asked about the U.S.’s request for help, Anand said that to their knowledge, a request has not been made to NATO for the type of assistance that is being requested and offered no specifics on what kind of support Canada is prepared to offer.
