It’s my Parting Shot for my reactions to the headlines in today’s Star-Phoenix Sports Section…..
First headline…A touch of Saskatchewan in Dunstone’s brier. My reaction…in today’s day and age of the import curler, it’s too bad that the break-through for Kamloops product Matt Dunstone as a Canadian men’s champion didn’t happen with his Saskatchewan foursome of Steve Laycock, Kirk Muyres and Dallan Muyres. Maybe, at some point, as I suggested last Friday in this space, there’ll be a trio of really good Saskie guys who befriend a top-notch player to join them and make the step towards being a Brier champ. Having said that, Dunstone winning for Manitoba makes more sense since his grandfather Jim was a very good, competitive skip in the Manitoba ranks back in the 1970s and 80s – I was on teams back then that got the chance to play against Jim Dunstone and company several times!!
Next headline…Topuria-Gaethje bout tops White House U-F-C card. reaction…if the U-F-C is going to hold a spectacle in Donald Trump’s White House, why not have the U-S President climb into the octagon against U-F-C bossman Dana White! Or against another of his buddies in W-W-E bossman Vince McMahon! Or, better year, why not Donald Trump against Vladimir Putin in a loser vacates his position as leader of his nation?! Now, that would be sports entertainment!!
Last headline…Mexico to roll out 100-thousand-stong security deployment for World Cup, President Kukulkan’s Plan to protect visitors unveiled at a military base. My reaction…this is a good and necessary step for the Mexicans to take, in the wake of the violence from a couple of weeks back after the death of a notorious drug lord at the hands of the government. The questions remain – will it be good enough for Mexico and what are the U-S and Canada going to do when it comes to security for matches in their respective countries?! One can only hope something crazy doesn’t happen!!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!
