This is Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. I’m not opposed to the idea of the bike lane on Victoria Avenue between Taylor and Ruth Streets. A lot of streets in that area – specially those going north/south because they are so wide, are great to cycle on. And I can totally see that on street parking isn’t in high demand given how homes along that route are situated but this still has a tone of Build it and they will come. If it’s peak usage in summertime at present is 29 cyclists, I seriously struggle to justify a snow removal budget that will suddenly get jacked up six times what is currently being paid out. And I’d like to know what the peak usage is in winter in order to justify that cost. Don’t get me wrong I’m not opposed to the bike lane. The reconstruction of Victoria Avenue between 8th Street and the Traffic Bridge, I think turned out beautifully, but surely common sense would indicate that roughly 30 people max in the area utilize that stretch of roadway then maybe we don’t have to plow it in the winter? Well, it still has to go to council and not all of council is on the transportation committee, so perhaps there will be still options presented that differ from that which was examined at committee level.
Adding a bike lane – not a terrible idea
