It’s my Parting Shot for some Weekend Short Shots…..
On a weekday in my cubicle at the Saskatoon Media Group, I will have anywhere from 10 to 15 website windows open in order to find the info needed to populate on air sports reports that range between 90 seconds to three minutes long. One of the websites I look at is The Score. That website is very good for stories and features – moreso on the N-F-L, N-B-A, U-S college football and basketball. They touch on all the other sports and leagues, but not to the degree they do with the ones I’ve mentioned. However, every once in a while, they surprise me with a dandy piece – like today’s, “projecting Canada’s 2030 men’s Olympic hockey roster.” When it comes to this website for interesting bits and information, sometimes you have to be like Shrek – patience donkey!
Get ready, Canada, to take a few more shots to our hockey pride as Quinn Hughes, not his overtime hero brother Jack, appears on Saturday Night Live. The American defenceman, who was able to escape Vancouver for Minnesota in this N-H-L season by trade, made no friends with Toronto media members when he defended Maple Leafs’ captain Auston Matthews as being a winner following the gold medal win. Matthews was the U-S captain in Milan, but Matthews can’t lead the Leafs to the promised land – no Stanley Cup win for the iconic Toronto franchise since 1967 and the Maple Leafs are likely going to miss the playoffs this season! Luckily, I’ll be in Regina with the Blades and will only get to see highlights of Hughes’ antics!!
If we are to believe everything we see and read with regards to upcoming activity on the N-H-L trade market, I might need a much longer than three minute sports report just for the deals! But, they haven’t happened as of this writing on Friday. The trade deadline is a week from today, the roster freeze was lifted back on Tuesday with two minor transactions completed that day, but nothing since! So much of what is going to go down will be salary cap dependant – meaning that the rumoured moves of such players as Jordan Binnington or Elias Pettersson or Tyler Myers or whomever you think should be moved or whom the hockey insiders believe will be traded, still requires being able to keep the involved teams under the salary cap – like it or not!!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!
