It’s my Parting Shot for my reactions to the headlines in today’s Star-Phoenix Sports Section…..
First headline…Celebrini is no stranger to games at higher level. My reaction…One thing I detest about some hockey experts is how they label young prospects as “generational talents” – yet there seems to be a generational talent every year! A generation is supposed to be an every 20 year type of time frame, so one outstanding male hockey player every 20 years is supposed to be the accepted time frame. However, of late, the experts can’t seem to decide who that is. I thought it would be Connor Bedard when he came through the W-H-L and played for the Regina Pats. However, Macklin Celebrini was next up and he’s a Generational Talent, having gone through a season in U-S College play. The latest Generational Talent is Gavin McKenna, the former Medicine Hat Tiger, now at Penn State. As of right now, based on his second N-H-L season and what he’s done for Canada at the Winter Olympics, Celebrini is the official Generational Talent!!
Next headline…Why are Canadian hockey players wearing Nike during the Olympics? Reaction…this is a rhetorical question of a headline, right?! Because, Hockey Canada has a deal with Nike to provide their national teams with equipment and gear, as opposed to players in the N-H-L who make their own choices for equipment and gear by brand. In the W-H-L, Under Armour provides all the jerseys for all 23 teams. These brand name mentions should expect a call from the Saskatoon Media Group’s Sales Manager Mike Sands for a request for payment!!
Last headline…The art of building a winner, Devika Desai reveals how Olympic figure skaters select their music and design
their programs. My reaction…an interesting read. Now, if only we could get an explanation as to how the judging of figure skating could be done more objectively or, better yet, come up with a way where determining the best figure skaters could be made to be as easy as determining balls and strikes in baseball! That would be with the Automated Ball-Strike System – not a human Angel Hernandez!!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!
