This is Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. There’s a group of retirees in Canada calling on Ottawa to shrink their Old Age Security (OAS) payments. They say they don’t need that money and feel it would be better spent on other priorities. Harry Grossmith is one of 11 retirees featured in a new video. It was produced by a group called Generation Squeeze. He says he’s not poor, he’s not struggling but he gets money every month just because he’s a senior. OAS is one of Canada’s costliest federal programs. I personally don’t know that many seniors in a position to claim they make enough money they don’t need OAS. Instead of putting the refused OAS payments in the federal coffers – I mean we’d all like to think they’d put the money in a good spot – but then again neither senators, nor the Governor General nor MP’s turn down their automatic pay increase every year which in several instances, is completely out of whack with lives of average Canadians. Mary Simon the Governor General makes nearly $400,000 a year in addition to being given a home to live in, and perks like clothing allowances and I think that is absolutely appalling. The whole system needs revamping. Starting with getting rid of the position of Governor General of Canada. And if seniors think they make enough money and want to give it back then it should go back into the OAS kitty and be distributed to those seniors among us who are living at the poverty line or just above it.
Seniors with so much money they don’t want OAS?
