It’s my Parting Shot for my Monday Musings…..
I guess when you win the Grey Cup, your pending free agent players become popular! It didn’t take long for the other eight C-F-L teams to start snapping up available Riders with the opening of the league’s negotiation window. All of the reported signings are just that – reported – all with the rider that says – barring anything unforeseen, said player is expected to sign with a new team! While the negotiation window is interesting to say the least and keeps the C-F-L in the news for a few days, it kind of takes the suspense out of the actual start of free agency on February 10, when it will be swallowed up by the Winter Olympics and the pending start of the men’s hockey tournament!
Yes, get ready for most of the Winter Olympics hype in the Canadian mainstream media to be placed on the strong, broad shoulders of the men’s hockey team! Oh, there will be mentions and pride when it comes to medals being one by Canadian athletes in other sports in Milan and Cortina, especially ones that are gold, but they’ll all pale when compared to the intrigue and microscopic analysis of every move that group makes, rightly or wrongly, because it’s the first best-on-best men’s hockey event in 12 years – with all due respect to the Four Nations Faceoff last year!!
While I offer congratulations to Kerri Einarson’s Gimli foursome for winning the Scotties Tournament of Hearts last night – a fifth time for Einarson – I do so grudgingly because I don’t hold out a lot of hope that she and her team won’t gag again on the World stage in a couple of months time! Can’t they be replaced by Rachel Homan’s quartet that I have a lot more faith in to win a World Championship that should be Canada’s on a year-by-year basis!!
Yes, I’m having trouble coming to grips with the fact that, thanks to numerous Canadians teaching other countries how to play the game and now those countries are beating us with far too much regularity than I like!!
Lastly, a non sports item, but people that work a drive-thru window need to either dress warmly or not be freaked out by a few seconds of cold when serving someone. The young lady today was so quick to open the window, take my 10-dollar bill and close the window – then quickly opened the window and basically threw my change at my hand before trying to quickly close the window again when she realized that the five dollar bill had dropped to the ground! A few seconds of cold aren’t going to kill you, nor would wearing a jacket!! Yeesh!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!
