It’s my Parting Shot for some Weekend Short Shots, done early as I have some personal business to attend to the next two days…..
The next time this commentary will come your way, it’ll be February and the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, Italy, will be mere days away from starting! I know this is rhetorical, but where do the days go!
On the other hand, this is the traditional weekend off for the N-F-L between the playing of the Conference finals and the Super Bowl being held. What I was surprised at is that the week off only came to be in 2004 – at least that’s what I read somewhere, but that can’t be true! What that person did say, that I agree with, is that the Super Bowl should be played on the Saturday after the two teams have, essentially, had a bye week. What’s the difference in playing Saturday night as opposed to Sunday night with all the time off?! It’s the middle of the weekend and everybody involved is back where they belong on Monday – no excuses!!
Back to the Winter Olympics where the preparations are on high speed now towards the start of competition a week from today and the Opening Ceremonies a week from Friday on February 6. When it comes to the latter, I appreciate how the athletes named to be Canada’s flag-bearers at the Opening Ceremonies feel. This morning, Mikael Kingsbury and Marielle Thompson were named to do the honours. Kingsbury is a three-time Olympic gold medallist in moguls, while Thompson is a two-time medallist in ski cross. Thompson said, quote, There just are so many amazing athletes to select from, that I got chosen is really kind of unbelievable, but very special. And, added Kingsbury, quote, This is one of the greatest honours I’ve ever received. Canada is a world power. Looking at all the names that have done it previously, they’re all exceptional athletes. That kinda hits me right in the heart and I’m proud of the choices made by Team Canada!!
Shame on any and all voters who didn’t vote for Bill Belichick to be in the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame the first time he was eligible! Eight Super Bowl rings – six as a head coach with the New England Patriots and two more as an assistant coach with the New York Giants more than anyone in N-F-L history – and that’s not good enough for induction right away?! Seriously! Get over your dislike for the Patriots’ dynasty and jealousy for the fact the 73-year-old has a 24-year-old girlfriend!! It should’ve been a unanimous selection by the 50 voters and those that didn’t vote for Belichick should be outed and taken off the voters list!!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk with the Blades in Lethbridge…and it turned out nice again!
