So, you’ve probably heard about the American casino owner in Vegas who is offering an at par rate for Canadian money for accommodations, drink prices, hotel stays and up to $500 for use in one of his three casinos. He says he just wants to get Canadians to start spending money across the border again. I’ve gone to the U.S. occasionally over the years, but it really has never been a big draw for me with the exception of a few choice locations. And mine is often based in the fact that I can go to say Mexico in the winter and do way better in terms of the value of the dollar and the dollar spent. Even with an enticing offer of using Canadian money at par, it doesn’t get me jazzed up about going. This long, drawn-out Trump tariff mess turned me off heading down south to the U.S. and continues even now, because it’s become somewhat ingrained, to buy Canadian when I go shopping. I mean for instance, I’ll pay sixty cents more for lettuce from Canada or Mexico versus the U.S. It makes me ponder whether once the tariff tiff blows over, I’ll switch back to just shopping based on the value. I have to admit though…. French’s mustard is king, but when it comes to ketchup – sorry it’s Heinz all the way.
