This is Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. I was mulling over what would be considered Christmas traditions while I was growing up. Not necessarily even right on the day of or on Boxing Day but for the season. For instance, in terms of movies, we always watched Sound of Music, Heidi – not sure anyone remembers that one – the original cartoon version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street, White Christmas. I can honestly say I never grooved to Diehard as a Christmas movie – not to say I didn’t like it. We always had turkey, and I know our news poll question also had more than 80 per cent preferring turkey. At our house making gravy for the turkey was an art form. Nowadays I lean to ham myself. And cranberries but the jelly one, not the one with berries. Some people like Ambrosia salad, apple salad was a big one in my mom’s family, and I’ve also had pistachio salad – yep dislike all of those. And I always remember that because I woke up so ungodly early on Christmas morning – so excited I couldn’t sleep – we were allowed to open our stocking without my parents being there. Santa gifts and gifts under the tree couldn’t be touched until everyone was up but the stocking was fair game, filled with cool little gifts, candies and an orange in the toe. Whatever the traditions in your family I hope you get to spend time as we head into the new year with those you love and who give you joy.
