It’s my Parting Shot for my Monday Musings…..
Congratulations off the top to Bruce Korte’s foursome for winning the Canadian Senior Men’s Curling Championship over the weekend in Ottawa. And, a hearty well done to Amber Holland’s quartet for being the runners-up in the women’s division. The Holland team includes my once-upon-a-time little work sister, third Jill Shumay! It doesn’t surprise me that Jill does well when it comes to chucking granite – that national title will happen for you sooner than later!
For many people in our province, the senior curling scene is almost as important, if not just as important, to follow as the men’s and women’s. After all, the 50-and-over gang are some of the best curlers this province has ever produced!
I quickly put a stop to an Edmonton Oilers’ fan within the Saskatoon Media Group from giving me the gears about how his team stomped my Winnipeg Jets on Saturday evening by a 6-2 score. I have witnesses who heard me say that I didn’t hold out a lot of hope for the Jets against the Oil on Saturday – seeings how they had played the night before, and won over Buffalo, then traveled to Edmonton to play an Oilers’ squad that didn’t play Friday and was on a high from scoring nine goals in a game earlier in the week! So there!!
If the N-H-L standings finish as they are right now, I will have zero interest in cheering for any, so-called, Canadian content. I despise the Montreal Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers, so I will be rooting for the teams playing against them – should they actually get there! I think the Oil will be in the Stanley Cup playoffs, but I’m not so certain about the Habs! Goodness, I hope I’m right on that sentiment!
And, after the World Cup of soccer draw and schedule of games on Friday and Saturday, I am hopeful that Canada’s first opponent next June is not Italy. I’m all for Northern Ireland or Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina – preferably the latter – to be the European playoff A qualifier to join Canada, Switzerland and Qatar in Pool B. It’s one thing for Canadians to already dislike Toronto, but when that city has that massive of an Italian background population, that might out-number Canadians attending that match at B-MO Field – I think I would be physically ill!!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!
