CUPE Saskatchewan has announced their support for new legislation that they say would protect workers rights in the province.
Bill 611, The Constitutional Questions (Notwithstanding Clause Referral) Amendment Act, would allow courts to comment on whether or not it is justified to invoke the Notwithstanding Clause.
The bill comes after Alberta’s decision to invoke the Notwithstanding Clause to end a teachers strike, CUPE Saskatchewan says the use of the Notwithstanding Clause was unprecedented and overrode the teacher’s right to fair contract negotiations.
CUPE Saskatchewan President Kent Peterson says that the union supports the legislation as they believe it will protect workers in Saskatchewan.
