Coming home wasn’t the tonic needed to cure the Saskatoon Blades of their current losing ways, as it turned out.
Kale Dach’s natural hat trick – a goal in each period – and 22 saves from Eric Tu – 15 in the first period – propelled the Calgary Hitmen to a 4-1 victory over the Bridge City Bunch before 3,788 fans at SaskTel Centre. For a second straight night, the Blue and Gold allowed the first four goals of the game. But, unlike Friday when the Blades were able to throw a scare into Moose Jaw in what turned out to be a 6-5 Warriors’ victory, Saskatoon wasn’t able to mount much of a response Saturday after falling behind. The Bridge City Bunch deserved better in the first period as they out-shot the visitors, who were playing their last of a six-game swing through the East Division over nine days, by a 15-7 count – yet trailed 2-0. The Calgary goals came on breakaways after the Blue and Gold had puck handling gaffes at the Hitmen blue-line, allowing former Prince Albert Raiders’ centre Harrison Lodewyk and Dach to race in alone on Evan Gardner to score. While Dach shares the same last name as former Blades’ stars Kirby and Colton and is also from Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, the 18-year-old forward is not related to them. Saskatoon was out-shot 17-8 the rest of the way with Hayden Harsanyi spoiling Tu’s shutout bid on a power play tally with 7:13 remaining in the third period. Tu won’t turn 17 years old until November 26. The Bridge City Bunch is now winless in five games with their season record dropping to 10-8-2. The Blue and Gold did go through a six-game winless skid from the start of December last year and into the Christmas break. They’ll try to avoid equaling that on Tuesday, Remembrance Day afternoon, when the Blades travel to Swift Current.
