The RCMP are asking for the public’s help after a shooting just north of Weyburn Friday night.

Around 8:00 p.m. RCMP responded to Highway #39, three kilometres northwest of Weyburn near the Richardson Pioneer/Viterra grain terminals and elevators where two women, travelling together in a black Ford Explorer going towards Weyburn, heard a loud crack.  RCMP say it was a bullet which went through the SUV and hit the passenger. A 44-year-old woman from Weyburn died at the scene.

The woman from the Weyburn area who was driving is not considered a suspect and is not in police custody. Police say at this time, the investigation indicates the incident is random.

Ashley St. Germaine of the RCMP Major Crimes Branch, “If you were driving on Highway #39 or northwest of Weyburn around 8:00 p.m., please report any suspicious people, vehicles or activity to police. If you saw a black Ford Explorer around that time, please contact police with any information. Was someone target practicing in the area? Was another vehicle driving erratically on that road? Please call investigators so we can determine if the information you have may assist us in this investigation.”

Police are warning people to lock their vehicle doors and remove the keys. They are also advising farmers who may be working late in the field right now to remain vigilant.
