For the first 35 minutes of Wednesday’s “rookie” game, it appeared to be a reversal of what happened Tuesday – except the Saskatoon Blades flipped the script on the Raiders, coming from behind for a 5-4 shootout triumph at the Art Hauser Centre.
On Tuesday at SaskTel Centre, the Bridge City Bunch scored the game’s final four goals after P-A opened the scoring. On Wednesday, the Blue and Gold opened the scoring, only to have the Raiders lead 3-1 with five minutes left in the second period. Prince Albert came out of the middle frame up 4-3, but Saskatoon tied the contest on Gavin Clark’s second goal in as many games. The five-minute, three-on-three overtime didn’t create a winner, leading to a shootout in which Blades’ goaltender Taye Timmerman stopped two Raiders’ shooters while Ben Bowtell and Dustin Willhoft (pictured) scored at the other end to improve the Bridge City Bunch’s pre-season record to 2-0-0. Bowtell had a goal and two assists during regulation time, Saskatoon product and defenceman Jack Lavallee had a goal and a helper while Estonia-born Willhoft had a goal and an assist as well. However, the Blue and Gold’s stars were goaltenders Ryley Budd and Timmerman as P-A out-shot Saskatoon 49-21 through three periods and the overtime. Budd made 20 saves and Timmerman blocked 25 shots. The 0-1-1 Raiders will be home to the Blades again on Friday at the Art Hauser Centre, but expect both teams to dress some veteran players and lineups that will more closely resemble what their regular season teams might look like compared to the first two outings.
