It’s my Parting Shot for my Monday Musings…..
A question I have received, in large numbers I might add, asks if Saturday night’s heart-stopping, thrilling and emotional W-C-B-L playoff game between the Saskatoon Berries and Moose Jaw Miller-Express was the greatest sports moment I’ve ever called and/or witnessed? Well, remember you’re talking to someone who has been in the mainstream sports media since 1979 and has been calling games in many different sports since 1981 – everything from multiple, heart-stopping overtime hockey games, to Hail Mary touchdown passes deciding football games, to desperation, buzzer-beater shots to win basketball games and even incredible last tock circus shots to win curling games! I still need to look through my score book from the 1994 Northern League return season of the Winnipeg Goldeyes to determine if Saturday’s roller-coaster ride that ended with Carter Beck’s 10th grand slam home run has a rival from that championship season in my old hometown! I will say this – that was a crazy, special moment that I won’t forget for a long time!
I mentioned back on Friday that the L-A Dodgers would be a litmus test for the American League East Division-leading Toronto Blue Jays over the weekend. To think that I was first introduced to a litmus test early in elementary school to determine whether a chemical liquid was acid or base. Now, the term litmus test is used in all areas of life with sports using it to determine whether a team or an athlete who has done well can step up and perform at the same level against sturdier, more competent opposition. After handily sweeping the National League’s worst team, the Colorado Rockies on weekdays last week, the Jays went into L-A and managed to salvage Sunday’s game after being paddled in the first two! Toronto is still a good team, but they have a ways to go before being considered a true World Series title threat!
I’ll admit to being a dinosaur in some respects – like my television viewing habits. I still subscribe to a cable service and watch a lot of network T-V, including sports. That means I’m subjected to watching commercials, ads for various products that a lot of people that subscribe to streaming services know nothing about – and want to avoid. But, I find some of them interesting and funny. Such as former N-B-A star Blake Griffin joining superstar singer and talk show host Kelly Clarkson, among others, on Wayfair spots. Or, a recent Booster Juice series of ads that have retired N-H-L defenceman Dion Phaneuf with his actress wife Elisa Cuthbert! I’m not tempted to buy those products just yet, but I found it interesting and thought you might as well!!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!
