Saskatoon received 15-20 milimetres of rain overnight, leading to some flooded underpasses early Friday morning.
Environment Canada Meteorologist Keane Kokolski says there could be 30-50 more milimetres in store for the region by the time Sunday morning rolls around, but Saskatoon isn’t the area that will be hit the hardest.
“The heaviest precip looks like it’s going to be concentrated in the Hudson Bay, Melfort, Tisdale, Nipawin area…and you’re looking at amounts potentially as high as 50-70 milimetres by Sunday morning.”
Despite the weather system moving though, Kokolski says the wildfire smoke isn’t going anywhere.
“Honeslty, the entire North is really on fire. There’s a lot of fires ongoing right now, unfortunately. Hopefully this rain does help with the smoke, but for the short term, the smoke doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere, and neither do the fires.”
There is also potential for hail, damaging winds, and heavier rain east of Regina and Moose Jaw, as well as southeast of Saskatoon.
Following the overnight downpour, the Saskatoon Fire Department issued a release regarding flooded underpasses. One vehicle was found stranded in the water at the Circle Drive and Idylwyld Drive underpass at 2;43 a.m., and two more vehicles drove into the water and became immobilized before Saskatoon police could block off south bound traffic.Tow trucks were dispatched to tow the immobilized vehicles, but the public is still being asked to avoid areas prone to flooding during and after heavy rain, as they could stall or be swept away. There are also reports of the Physical Activity Complex gym on the USask Campus being closed due to flooding.
Reports indicate flooding was also an issue in parts of Market Mall on Friday.
