The City of Saskatoon says one person has been sent to hospital after their legs were reportedly run over by a garbage truck.
The Saskatoon Police Service says impairment is not believed to be a factor in an accident that took place Thursday morning involving a city garbage truck.
Saskatoon Police say they responded to an injured person call around 10:00 a.m. Thursday to an alley behind the 800 block of 20th Street West that run between Avenue I South and Avenue H South.
They found a man suffering from what were believed to be non-life-threatening injuries to his legs and he was transported to hospital by paramedics for treatment. Police say the City of Saskatoon garbage truck was on a routine pick up when the driver was notified by a bystander that he had just ran over the legs of a man lying in the alley.
The truck operator stopped the truck and remained at the scene. The accident remains under investigation, but the Collision Analyst Unit says the driver was negotiating a left turn to go north in the alley when the incident occurred.
The City of Saskatoon in a news release says the alley at that location has a 90-degree sharp turn to the left. As well the City notes that garbage trucks have a right-hand driver’s seat and steering wheel so the operator can see better for collecting and tipping bins on the right-hand side of the truck.
Angela Gardiner, General Manager of Utilities and Environment said, “Our thoughts are with this individual and their loved ones right now.”
