March 8th is International Women’s Day and to recognize that, a Saskatoon woman decided to organize a march. Justice Noon says she put the word out about a march and heard back from lots of different organizations so a committee was struck.
One of Noon’s incentives for the Women’s March comes from the news of a Saskatchewan group on a social media platform where nude photos of women and girls were posted without their permission. Many of the victims are from northwest Saskatchewan. Noon says with this happening in the north, it was happening to Indigenous women and it’s very upsetting.
She wanted to organize the march as a show of solidarity for all of those who have been affected wherever they live. International Women’s Day is about gender equality and celebrating steps forward, but it’s also about taking action. Noon says when she realized Accelerate Action was the theme for this year’s International Day, she knew what she had to do, and tomorrow’s Women’s Walk is the result. Anyone who wants to join in is asked to meet by the Vimy Memorial with the opening ceremony at 1pm tomorrow (Sat).
