The vacancy rate for standard spaces in seniors’ residences across Saskatchewan is 15.4 per cent this year. That’s an increase from 10.3 in 2017. Canada Mortgage and Housing says the overall vacancy rate for total spaces also increased to 13.3 per cent from nine percent last year. The overall average monthly rent for a standard space in the province rose from $2,880 in 2017 to $3,026 this year, which is about a five per cent increase. The average rent in the Saskatoon census metropolitan area is considerably lower than in Regina. Here, the average rent is $2,987. In Regina, its $3,611. CMHC says, across the province, the vacancy rate for standard spaces was highest in residences that opened in 2000 or later. These also charge a higher average monthly rent.
