So the Prime Minister of Canada has dinner with the incoming President of the United States who during dinner jokes about Canada becoming the 51st U.S. State if it can’t handle the punishing effects of a 25% tariff for failing to address trade and immigration issues. Ha Ha, very funny. Mr Trump goes on to say days later on his social media platform that he looks forward to seeing the “Governor of the great State of Canada” again soon. And you know what’s actually funny? I read where some Canadians don’t think the idea of becoming the next U.S. State is such a bad idea. A Leger poll suggests 13% of us would like such a thing to happen. The demographic breakdown shows more than twice as many men than women like the idea and more than twice as many Conservative party supporters are on board than Liberals. The lowest level of enthusiasm comes from NDP supporters. Asked about Trump’s comments ahead of a cabinet meeting, Immigration Minister Marc Miller was quoted as saying, “It sounds like we’re living in an episode of South Park”. That sounds appropriate to me. Can you imagine the logistics of becoming part of the United States? I mean seriously? 10 provinces and 3 Territories with a Parliamentary style democracy absorbed into 50 States and 14 Territories with a Republican style democracy. Bye bye Universal Medicare? Bye bye Metric system and hello again Fahrenheit and miles per hour? In your dreams, or nightmares.
