Sutherland had starring roles in more than 100 movies, such as The Dirty Dozen, M*A*S*H, Animal House and the Hunger Games.

In a social media post, his son Keifer (also a well-known actor) said his father was “never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly.”

Sutherland never won an Oscar, but he did receive an honourary Academy Award in 2017.

The New Brunswick born actor has ties to Saskatchewan. His first wife was Shirley Douglas, the daughter of former Saskatchewan NDP Premier Tommy Douglas. Sutherland also met his third wife, Canadian actress Francine Racette, while on the set of the 1974 movie Alien Thunder which was filmed at three locations in Saskatchewan.
