At the last Saskatoon City Council meeting, there was a close vote at 6 – 5 for building an organics processing facility to be built south of the landfill at a cost of about $22.1 million, to be funded through a loan and repaid by utility fees. Coming up tomorrow morning (Tues), Administration is recommending to the Environment, Utilities and Corporate Services Committee that a capital project be established and funded through borrowing, subject to a public hearing and an intent to borrow report.

The report to council says 30 per cent of the funding could come from user fees or existing property tax support and the rest would be paid by the curbside organics utility as part of the processing fee, which would have an impact of $1.34 per cart per month in 2026. If the recommendation is approved, an intent to borrow report will be taken to the May 29th City Council Public Hearing meeting for approval. The goal is to have the processing plant up and running in 2026.
