While the carbon tax goes up April 1st, the excise tax on liquor also goes up 2 per cent.
As of today, the carbon pricing plan increased from $65 a tonne to $80 a tonne. It is designed to rise every year by $15 until it reaches $170 a tonne by 2030.
What the Prime Minister and other federal politicians get paid also increased today.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation says a backbench MP’s salary is currently $194,600. A minister collects $287,400, while the prime minister takes home a $389,200 annual salary. By the CTF’s calculation as of today Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will get paid more than $400,000 a year.
The CTF says according to Statistics Canada the average annual salary among all full-time workers is about $67,000.
In terms of the carbon price, the increase means the price on a litre of gasoline will now be 17.6 cents per litre, up 3.3 cents per litre from before. As of today the price for a litre of diesel will include 21.39 cents in carbon price, up from 17.38 cents.
The price for propane will now include 12.38 cents a litre in carbon price, up from 10.08 cents. And at $80 per tonne, the carbon price will add 15.3 cents to a cubic metre of natural gas, up from 12.4 cents.
