The spring runoff potential has improved in some areas, but the majority of Saskatchewan remains in the below normal or well below normal categories.
Snowstorms during the first weekend of March delivered up to 40 centimetres of snow in some locations, such as Saskatoon and Yorkton. These areas can now anticipate a near normal runoff.
The March 1st map produced by the Water Security Agency is in sharp contrast to last month when nearly the entire province was in the well below normal category. The far north and the majority of southwest and south-central Saskatchewan remain in the well below normal runoff category. Although drier conditions persist, most major water supply reservoirs in southern Saskatchewan are at or above normal levels; however, reservoirs such as Avonlea and some in the southwest (e.g., Altawan and Cypress) may experience surface water supply concerns due to the depleted snowpack.
