The Chief of the Delisle & District Fire Department hopes they never have to use the specialty equipment, but would like to have it available, just in case. Mike Given says they took grain entrapment training a few weeks ago, and now would like to have that equipment handy. He estimates it would total just over $4,000, so they will be fundraising to be able to purchase this equipment.
He describes the largest piece as a segmented metal tube that would go around the person mired in the grain. Then a small auger is used inside the tube to drain the grain out. Ropes, carabiners and harnesses are also need, which could possibly be used in other types of rescues like confined space and low angle rescues, and possibly surface water rescues.
Two members of the Delisle & District Fire Department had to be rescued themselves earlier this month. They were responding in a fire truck to an accident west of Delisle with icy conditions. The truck fishtailed and with all of the water weight in the vehicle sloshing around, it rolled, ending up on its roof.
One member took a week off work with minor injuries, Given says, and the other had a couple of broken bones and is healing at home. He thanks the Montrose Fire Department for helping out with both the original accident and the fire truck rollover. Given says Saskatoon paramedics, STARS, the RCMP and the Vanscoy RM Police also responded to the accidents.
