The Saskatchewan NDP is launching a petition called No Moe Gas Tax, which aims to urge the Premier to scrap the fuel tax and save families 15 cents per litre for the next six months.
Opposition Leader Carla Beck says premiers across the country have recognized the need to give families a break, and Moe is now the only Prairie Premier who has not axed the tax on gas and diesel.
“This is a measure we’re proposing, like other provinces have, that is not indefinite. It is a suspension of that gas tax to get us through the months as we go into seeding, as we’ve got minus fifty temperatures,” Beck states.
NDP Finance Critic Trent Wotherspoon added that according to a recent Angus Reid poll, Saskatchewan residents are reporting the worst levels of financial insecurity in Canada. He urges the government to act today.
“That would save households almost $400 in the next six months. That would make a big difference for a lot of families, small businesses, and certainly for those in rural Saskatchewan,” Wotherspoon explained. “We know that the government could act today in a real, tangible way.”
The pair estimates that axing the tax would cost the provincial government just under $300 million dollars, however Beck states that “this is about priorities”.
