Whether you’re staying home for the holidays or venturing out on a road trip, CAA Saskatchewan is providing some safety tips and precautions. CAA Saskatchewan Director of Communications Christine Niemczyk says when on a holiday vacation, a very common practice could become a serious mistake. “Social media, very very popular these days, but show some discretion. Never let any potential burglars or anyone know that you are not home,” she advises. Another way to prevent unwanted guests is to make your home look lived in. This can include getting a neighbor to shovel your driveway, putting your television and lights on a timer, and postponing your mail service.
If a family is flying to their holiday destination, she recommends that flights should be checked regularly once booked, as cancellations and delays are common during this peak season. When heading out on a road trip, Niemczyk says drivers should check highway conditions, and prepare with winter tires, a roadside safety kit, and nonperishable food items in case of a storm. Also, she advises to stay in your vehicle in the instance of a blizzard, and do not exit the vehicle to look for help.
For families staying at home, she says Christmas trees, lights and decorations should be kept away from heat sources and presents should be kept out of sight and away from windows to prevent robberies. Artificial trees need to be fire resistant, and live trees need to be watered.
