Let’s have a look at how we define each generation. Those born up to and including 1945 are referred to as the Greatest or the Silent Generation. Today they are 78 years old and up. Anyone born between 1946 and 1964 is a Baby Boomer. Boomers are now between 59 and 77 years old. Gen X is next, born between 1965 and 1980. A Gen X’er is between 43 and 58 years of age. Millennials were born between 1981 and 1996 and they are now between 27 and 42 years old. Next comes Gen Z, born between 1997 and 2012. Those in Gen Z are between 11 and 26 years old. Finally, we have Generation Alpha consisting of those born between 2013 through today consisting of newborns through 10-year-olds. They say Gen Alpha extends to 2025. Apparently, those born after that up through 2039 will be part of Gen Beta. All Generations don’t contain the same number of years. There is no consensus on the exact start and end date of each. Generations are defined by the social, political and economic events that shape the lives and experiences of people born around the same time. Generations are really arbitrary labels that are created by researchers, marketers, or the media to describe and categorize us based on our birth year.
