Beginning on January 2nd, Saskatoon’s curbside collection dates and routes in nearly every neighborhood will be changing.
Brock Storey, City of Saskatoon’s Environmental Operations Manager, says the changes will serve as a way to cut down on fuel consumption, costs, and greenhouse gas emissions.
In order to reduce the amount of fuel that is consumed by garbage trucks, Storey says the trucks need to be able to collect as must waste as possible in one area of the city before making a trip to the dump or another neighborhood. Storey adds that this is the first major collection route adjustment since 2013, when the Gordie Howe Bridge first opened.
Although collection will maintain at a bi-weekly rate throughout the winter, the City will be closely monitoring how full each cart is, as well as the set-out rate of certain carts. This will help determine the rate at which the carts are being filled, and help the City make suggestions to improve the service.
Storey urges residents to go online to Saskatoon.ca/collections calendar to check their schedule. The Waste Wizard app also has this feature. As the shift to a new route pick up takes place, some residents will go longer periods between collections.
