The Canadian band Walk off the Earth has released a modern take on the 1978 classic song ‘Y.M.C.A.’, that is revamped to focus on the topic of mental health.
The cover was created in collaboration with the YMCA to draw awareness to their free mental health program for youth called Y mind. YMCA Marketing and Philanthropy Director Serena Dallas says not many lyrics needed to be changed, and it was astounding how relevant a message from 45 years ago is to today. Only a few select words had to be changed to bring the focus to mental health, such as the phrase ‘young man’ to ‘young mind’.
She adds that music plays a huge role in many people’s lives, and she hopes the new song will resonate with Saskatchewan youth in need of a program such as Y Mind.
The program is focused on helping people ages 13-30 cope with stress and anxiety, as well as meet people in their city who are dealing with the same feeling. During the seven-week program, participants learn coping methods such as breathing techniques, meditations, and mindfulness activities. With sessions beginning in October, the YMCA will be doing continuous intakes in the Saskatoon area. The program can be joined online and in-person.
The newly released song can be listened to on YouTube.
