‘Thank-you’ ceremony held on James Smith Cree Nation as anniversary of mass-stabbing approaches

The mass-casualty tragedy that occurred on September 4th of last year was the largest mass stabbing in Canada’s history. To mark the anniversary of the incident, which saw 11 people killed, James Smith Cree Nation held a thank you ceremony for all the organizations and individuals who reached out to help.

JSCN Chief Wally Burns spoke at the ceremony, which was held to kick off the four-day Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Traditional Health Gathering. Additional speakers include FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron, FSIN First Vice-chief David Pratt, and PAGC Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte.
Burns acknowledged RCMP, EMTs, the federal and local governments, banks, businesses, volunteers, chiefs, council members, and lastly, the families of the victims.
On September 4th, 2022, Myles Sanderson is believed to have killed 11 people including his brother Damien and injured 17 others in the Cree Nation and in nearby Weldon.
