Canadian Immigrant magazine has included a Saskatoon man in its Top 25 Canadian Immigrants awards for 2023.
The nominees are chosen for their positive impact on Canada on a local or national level.
Ali Abukar is the CEO of the Saskatoon Open Door Society.
Canadian Immigrant Magazine says he fled Somalia at 18 years old and landed in Egypt as a refugee.
He worked and studied there for a decade and then arrived in Canada, completing his master’s degree in social work in Ontario.
Abukar moved to Saskatoon in 2013 and worked his way up in the Saskatoon Open Door Society to CEO.
It’s one of the largest newcomer-serving agencies in the Prairies with more than 220 employees serving more than 13,000 newcomers annually.
