BHP still hopes to have a producing Potash mine about 150 kilometres east of Saskatoon. The company continues to work on the Jansen project noting the discovery of a first layer of Potash during recent exploration is a significant milestone. Manager of Corporate Affairs Ken Smith predicts if developed, the Jansen mine will be a technologically modern and efficient model for future BHP projects. Smith says moving ahead to full scale construction is not being recommended this year because of the low commodity price and BHP is looking for a project partner. The company may seek board approval for Jansen if the financial picture for the Potash project improves.
