On Instagram, both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau have announced they are separating after 18 years of marriage. They married in May of 2005.
The social media posts from both are the same. They say the decision was made after many meaningful and difficult conversations. Both ask that for the well-being of the children that everyone respect their privacy. Justin and Sophie have three children – 15-year-old Xavier, 14-year-old Ella-Grace and 9-year-old Hadrien.
This is only the second time in Canada’s history that a Prime Minister has announced a separation while in office. The other was Justin Trudeau’s father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau who separated from Justin’s mother, Margaret, in 1979. They divorced in 1984.
