A Regina man is facing nine charges after driving a stolen vehicle while impaired, crashing the vehicle, assaulting a bystander, and assaulting a peace officer during his arrest.
On Thursday at midnight, officers received reports of an impaired driver in the 2600 block of 28th Avenue. A traffic stop was attempted, but the driver ignored police commands and sped away. Half an hour later, the same vehicle was reported to be driving erratically on Ring Road. The vehicle then collided with a guardrail, and the driver excited the vehicle, walked into traffic, and began throwing objects at cars passing by. Police say a witness to the car crash approached the suspect to assist him, but the man assaulted him, and proceeded to swing a metal pipe in the ditch, which he would later throw at a patrol vehicle. The suspect was not compliant with the police, as he assaulted the officer that attempted his arrest. It was determined that the vehicle in question had been stolen.
Twenty-six-year-old Eliya Hamad from Regina now faces 9 charges and appeared in Provincial Court Friday morning at 9:30am.
