On the heels of a deadly workplace accident in Saskatchewan the Workers Compensation Board just happens to be holding its free, two-day Compensation Institute in Saskatoon.
The event is underway at TCU Place in Saskatoon with more than 500 people registered to attend.
A worker died Friday night in Regina while working on the maintenance and extension of the airport’s main runway. The Regina Airport Authority announced Saturday night that work would be halted until today to allow everyone to regroup.
Meanwhile, WCB’s Compensation Institute features what organizers describe as “world-class international and local presenters who will share their experiences and perspectives on a range of workplace safety issues and topics that our customers have let us know they want to learn about.”
In a news release the WCB says this year’s topics include preventing serious injuries and fatalities, leadership through change and adapting to change, safety communication, safety self-awareness, mental health and burnout, and the Safe Worker and Safe Employer Awards.
Presenters include:
•Curt Minard, a power line technician from Weyburn who was involved in an electrical contact incident in the workplace that resulted in him being electrocuted with 14,400 volts of electricity. Through determination, he was able to recover and went on to become a world champion hockey player and a Paralympic snowboarder for Canada.
•Dr. Tyler Amell, an internationally recognized leader of workplace health and productivity who specializes in health and well-being technology, data analytics and disability prevention. He is the chief health and strategy officer at MediKeeper, a wellness technology company, and faculty and registrar at Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences. Dr. Amell will share steps to prevent serious workplace injuries and fatalities.
•Dr. George Ayee, a bestselling author and highly experienced consultant, speaker, coach and trainer with more than 25 years of experience in leadership, change, transformation and organizational development. He has written about topics such as leading successful change and transformation and resilience in change. He will speak about transformational leadership for optimal results.
•Ted Schick, a corporate trainer and consultant with his own business, Schick Corporate Learning, since 2009. With more than 30 years of experience leading people, he will discuss the 10 commandments of safety communications at Compensation Institute.
